Beasypalooza 2003
Tournament Details and Schedule
Hey folks, this is Mark. Well, here is the scoop on the big tourney this weekend. Schedules, directions and whatnot are given below. There won't be any captains' meeting. Just try to get to the fields for each game.
The lovely and talented Dan Ford will be acting as the Field Marshal, so if you have questions, you can just find me, Katherine or Dan or anyone else who has their finger on the pulse.
DIRECTIONS / FIELDS
For directions to the Dyke Fields at Acadia University, see the Beasypalooza Map. Main Street comes directly from Exit 10 off the Highway 101.
All the fields are at the same location, and are listed as NW, NE, SW, SE and Field 5. Field 5 (or "South-Central") is situation in between the SW and SE fields.
COSTS, etc
All teams are reminded of the $60 team fee for mixed teams and $50 for open/womens teams. All teams are also asked to bring a stuffed toy for the Halifax Children's Hospital. There will be field food, but no proper lunch or dinner provided.
GAME RULES
Uh, how 'bout these suggestions: games to 13 or to time cap. Please note that each game begins 1:20 after the previous games begin. There will be merely a "suggested" game end horn for each round after 1:10, but we really couldn't care less if teams play on or end early in order to make mega-cheers. Just as long as your off in time for the next game.
DINNER/PARTY
A party/bbq will be held at Sam Eaton's folks' place at 133 Main Street (see above map), where everyone is encouraged to bring their own food and drink, as well as extras for the party. It will be a good time.

Beasypalooza Update (12 May 03)
From the venerable Mark Beasy:
Hey guys, this is Mark. Here's an update on where we stand for the tournaments, May 24 and 25. If you have questions about what's going on, please ask.
A reminder that this tournament is all about do-it-yourself. I freely invite teams and players to donate prizes (and come up with reasons for them!), come up with spirit ideas, and generally suggest ways to make it a fun weekend.
Saturday, Mixed Division I
- Krank (Halifax)
- SOS (Fredericton)
- Spawn (Fredericton)
- Squid (Halifax)
- Sugar (Halifax)
Saturday, Mixed Division II
- H.U.R.T.T. (Halifax)
- Mt. A (Sackville, NB)
- Mudslides (Moncton)
- Y.A.T.T. (formerly "Robin's Team" -- Halifax)
- Smack (Fredericton)
- SCUM (Saint John)
- Team Unknown (formerly "Chris's Team" -- Halifax)
- Valley (Wolfville et al)
I remind the teams that this is not a traditional tourney in the "pools, crossovers and finals" sense, ie it's just a chance to get out and play some fun games. The teams in the Div II division should give me an idea of what teams they would like to play against -- and if they want 3 or 4 games -- and I'm sure I can accomodate at least half of your requests.
Sunday, Open
- Gregor's Team (Halifax)
- Halifax Masters (Halifax)
- Spawn Men (Fredericton)
- St J / Moncton combo
- More open teams? Halifax?
Sunday, Women
- Halifax Women 1 (Halifax)
- Halifax Women 2 (Halifax)
- Spawn Women (Fredericton)
- St J / Moncton combo
Costs
Each Saturday team owes $60, cash or cheques payable to me (ME! ME! ME!). Sunday teams owe $50. Each team is also requested to bring a stuffed toy for the Children's Hospital in Halifax. Any profit will go to a as-yet-unchosen charity in the region.
Schedule/Format
Games on Sat will being at 9:30 and go til roughly 5:30 or so. Sunday should start a little later and end earlier in order to get folks on their way (with just 3 games each). Teams can request to play either 3 or 4 games, you just have to let me know. There will be byes along the way as well. For all but the Sat, Div II field, each team's list of opponents is pretty much dictated by small number of teams.
Fields
All games will be at the Dyke Fields at Acadia University (same as last year). We're trying to work out a way to get shower and washroom facilities at the university, especially since there will be very limited opportunities for showers at our camping facilities...
Accomodations
For those looking to stay in the area, both Sam Eaton and Katherine Benedict have offered a fair amount of camping space at their places, with obviously a limit. Sam's place is right in town, and Katherines is near the beach at picturesque Blomidon, about 20 mins from Wolfille. Please contact them directly to arrange a place:
- Sam -
- Katherine -
Other options include:
Tenting - Land of Evangaline Family Camping Ground 542-5309
www.campingnovascotia.com/campgrounds.cfm?mid=31.
Roselawn cottages - 542-3420 (just up the street, less than 5 min walk from Sam's place). They have very reasonable rates for rooms for 4 + people with kitchenettes.
Food
There will be the usual amount of field food available, fruit, bagels, etc. This is low frills, so don't expect Peking Duck or sushi for lunch, but there are places to get a hearty lunch in the area.
Like last year, dinner is do-it-yourself. We'll have a few bbqs set up at our party location again this year (possibly Sam Eaton's again) where we ask people to bring their own food for them. We also fully invite people to donate things like condiments, and whatever else makes a bbq party go well. It would also be very nice if people brought their own plates since we wish to keep trash to a minimum (ie things like paper plates and plastic cutlery).
Alright, that's it for now. Talk to me if you have questions, but rest assured that more info is coming.
Tournament Announcement
Now that fields have been obtained, we are able to once again offer great split infinitives and our summer season-opening tournament, Beasypalooza (aka 'Discs and Dykes'). Again, Katherine Benedict and other friends from the Valley area will be helping out to make this a great weekend.
Like last year, this is meant to be a very relaxed format with two separate tournaments for the two days. Saturday will feature two co-ed divisions (competitive and recreational). Sunday will feature games among mens' and womens' team from the region.
Date:
May 24/25, 2003
Location:
Acadia University Dyke Fields, Wolfville Nova Scotia
Saturday:
Competitive Division: 4/3 ratio (suggested)
Rec Division: 5/2 - 4/3 ratio, but can be relaxed
Sunday:
Both Mens' and Womens' Games
Teams that have expressed interested:
Sat (Comp): Spawn (Fredericton), SOS (Fredericton), Sugar (Halifax), Krank (Halifax), Krank 2 (Halifax), Squid (Halifax)
Sat (Rec): Acadia (Wolfville), Team Unknown (Halifax), H.U.R.T.T. (Halifax), Mt. A (Sackville, NB), Mudslides (Moncton), Robin's Team (Halifax), Smack (Fredericton), Tortoise (Valley), SCUM (Saint John)
Sun (Mens): Halifax Masters, Spawn Men, Gregor's Men, StJ/Monc Men
Sun (Womens): Spawn Women, Halifax 1, Halifax 2, Monc-StJ Women
Sunday could be very exciting since, as far as we know, there has never been this format in a Maritime tournament before! It is our hope that there will be at least 4 mens' teams and at least 3 womens' teams playing.
Costs:
Don't know exactly, but it will be cheap (~$50 - $100 per team per day). Tournament is low frills with overage going to charity.
Accomodations:
We're working on that, but we imagine there will be plenty of camping for everyone in the vicinity.
One thing we want to stress about this tournament is that it's meant mainly as an opportunity for people to get out and play -- it's not about exact ratios, trophies, and rigid adherence to methods. For example, games can be played 6-on-6 if for some reason one team doesn't have alot of players. The point is to play.
A lot more information will be coming as the weekend approaches. For now, please contact with all questions and expressions of interest... or just to say "Hi".
